After further investigation - on my Mac (Tahoe 26.6.2) - Smolpad is not under icloud > saved to icloud - whereas on my IOS and iPad it is there and the toggle is green. So items are syncing just fine between my iOS and iPad but not my Mac.

Thanks for checking that, it explains it. Your Mac copy is keeping the notes on the Mac itself, which is why it is missing from iCloud’s app list and why the phone and iPad only see each other. Smolpad on the Mac joins iCloud only when iCloud Drive is turned on for the same Apple Account, and it checks when it opens. So: in System Settings, open your Apple Account, then iCloud, and make sure iCloud Drive is on under Saved to iCloud. Then quit Smolpad and open it again. It copies your notes into iCloud on its own, the bar at the bottom of a note changes from Local · Smolpad to iCloud · Smolpad, and the app appears in the list. If the bar still says Local after that, tell me and we will dig further.

My Mac iCloud is on and when I look at it has a green ball and says “Saved to iCloud”. When I further click on “See all” Smolpad is not there. Other apps that i use between devices are there with a toggle next to them. I have de-installed the app and reinstalled it trying to get it to show up in the “Saved to ICloud” app list on my Mac but it just won’t.

Thanks for the screenshots, they help. The grey cloud on the Mac is not a dead button: that card is the selected one, and the Mac draws the selection in grey whenever the Settings window is not the active window, which it is not while you take a screenshot. So iCloud is chosen on the Mac, the same as on your phone. What I need to know now is where the Mac is actually keeping the notes. In that same Storage pane, click Show in Finder and tell me where the folder opens: inside iCloud Drive, or somewhere else on the Mac. That one answer tells me which side to fix.

One correction to what I wrote above: the grey is not about the window. Your Mac's accent color is set to Graphite in System Settings > Appearance, and Smolpad draws that card in the accent color, so on your Mac the selected card is grey where mine is blue. The meaning is the same, iCloud is the chosen storage, and the Show in Finder question still stands.

When I click on “Storage” and then “Show in Finder" in the app, the folder Smolpad is storing notes on my mac as follows;
User > Library > Containers > Smolpad > Data > Documents > Smolpad

Thank you, that path is the answer: your Mac copy is keeping notes in its own folder and has never been let into iCloud Drive. The list you checked is for a different kind of iCloud sync, which is why Smolpad is not on it on any Mac. The one that matters is on iCloud Drive's own page: in System Settings, open your Apple Account, then iCloud, then Drive. Two things to look at there: that Sync this Mac is on, and that Smolpad appears under Apps syncing to iCloud Drive with its switch on. Turn on whichever is off, then quit and reopen Smolpad. It copies your notes into iCloud on its own, and the bar at the bottom of a note changes to iCloud · Smolpad.

Working now, thanks. Why did it not do this upon installing?

Glad it is working. It should have from the start, and the reason it did not is on our side: Smolpad checks whether iCloud Drive is available to it once, when it opens. If the answer is no at that moment, because that switch was off or because iCloud Drive was still getting ready right after the install, it keeps the notes on the Mac and does not ask again until the next time it launches. The fix is in the next version: it checks again on its own each time Smolpad comes forward, and moves the notes over as soon as iCloud Drive lets it in.

The fix is on its way: Smolpad 1.3.6 went to App Review tonight, and it checks for iCloud Drive again each time it comes forward, so a Mac that misses the first check joins on its own. Settings > Storage also gains a line that says what iCloud is doing. If you would like it before it reaches the App Store, the TestFlight build on smolpad.com has it now.

1.3.6 is on the App Store now, for Mac, iPhone and iPad, and it carries the fix from this thread: a Mac joins iCloud as soon as iCloud Drive is turned on, and asks again on its own if iCloud is slow to answer at launch. Settings › Storage also says what iCloud is doing now, so a sync that is not working says so where you would look. Thanks for working through this with me.
